Bar Tool Care and Storage
Identify the actual material and finish before cleaning. Solid copper, copper plating, gold-coloured coatings and gold plating do not share one universal care rule. The manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model come first.

Check what the finish actually is
Read the description and care label rather than relying on colour. A copper-looking shaker may be coated stainless steel rather than solid copper. A gold finish may use a different treatment from a plated item. Check the interior as well as the outside, and keep any instructions supplied with the tool.
A gentle routine when instructions are unclear
- Empty the tool after use and separate removable pieces.
- Wash gently with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge.
- Rinse away residue, including around rims and seams.
- Dry promptly with a soft cloth and let hidden moisture escape before storage.
This is a cautious default, not permission to override a model-specific restriction. Avoid leaving acidic drinks or sticky residue sitting in the vessel overnight.
Do not use a copper-polishing trick on every copper colour
A polish intended for solid copper may be unsuitable for a coating or plated finish. Abrasive pads and unapproved cleaners can damage the surface. Do not start with an acid-and-salt mixture, a harsh polish or an abrasive cream just because a household tip recommends it for copper.
If a tool has a lacquer, lining or other protective layer, use only the cleaning method its maker permits. When the material is uncertain, identify the model before attempting stain removal.
Can gold or copper finishes go in a dishwasher?
Some manufacturers explicitly allow particular decorative finishes in specified dishwashers; others require hand washing. That is why an absolute rule based on colour is misleading. Check the exact finish and any detergent or temperature restrictions. Permission for one brand’s gold model does not transfer to another brand.
Store without rubbing the finish
Let pieces dry fully, then use a drawer divider or a suitable dry storage place so coated surfaces do not scrape against other tools. Do not force pieces tightly together. Inspect peeling, rough areas or exposed layers rather than polishing over damage.
If a food-contact surface is damaged or the maker cannot identify the finish, pause use and ask for model-specific advice. Routine cleaning should not involve sanding or stripping a surface.
Frequently asked questions
Are copper-coloured shakers always solid copper?
No. They may use plating or another decorative treatment over a different material.
Can I use metal polish on a gold-finish jigger?
Only if the maker explicitly permits that product for the finish. A polish suitable for one metal can damage another surface treatment.
Is all gold barware hand-wash only?
No. Some exact models are dishwasher-safe under stated conditions. Check the maker’s instructions rather than using colour as the rule.
Should I soak plated tools overnight?
Avoid prolonged soaking unless the exact instructions allow it. Clean after use, rinse and dry rather than leaving residue and moisture trapped.
